Curtain injection and crack repair

Harvard University, Cambridge, USA

ADCOS USA used polyurethane and acrylic injection resins to water seal and repair the steam tunnels of Harvard University in Cambridge. The 2.25 miles tunnels were originally built to house all the pipes servicing the buildings. The tunnels were buried 10 feet below street level and about half of the system runs along the Charles River, which causes the water infiltration in the tunnels. The nearly 100-year-old tunnels were in desperate need of repair, with shrinkage cracks, map cracking and the existing waterproofing system failing.

A variety of injection resins and techniques were used, but especially the use of the PURINJECT 1C HYDROGEL ALT created a big advantage in this project. The PURINJECT 1C HYDROGEL ALT is a multi-ratio hydrophilic polyurethane injection resin that allows the applicator to inject a waterproof curtain gel wall around the structure and secondly finish the injection site and local cracks with a waterproof expanding foam. This allows the applicator to achieve curtain wall and cracking injections with a single material.
